PORTLAND — With three quick shots, the Mountain Valley boys’ basketball team was on the ropes Thursday night.

Falmouth opened the second quarter with a trio of long-range jumpers that quickly turned a seemingly harmless three-point lead into a double digit advantage. The Yachtsmen never looked back in a convincing  67-37  win over the Falcons. Falmouth advances to Saturday afternoon’s Western B final against Cape Elizabeth.

Falmouth opened the second quarter with 13 straight points and hit six of its seven first-half 3-pointers in the second quarter to build a 20-point lead.

“They just couldn’t miss,” said Mountain Valley coach Rick White. “We talked about that all the way down here. We had to make sure we knew where their shooters were. They hit their shots.”

Stefano Mancini led Falmouth with 28 points, including four 3’s – two shy of the Western B record. John Roberts added nine while Sam Horning hit for seven. Mountain Valley was led by Cam Kaubris with 10 and Jake Arsenault with nine.

“Every chance we got to try to get through their screen, we left guys open,” said White. “When we left people open they hit their shots. They’re a good shooting team. We knew that coming in.”

The Falcons (18-1) had the lead early and were up 7-5 late in the first when Mancini finished the quarter with a 3-pointer and a fadeaway jumper. That was a sign of things to come for Falmouth.

“Everyone talks about playing at the Civic Center and the background,”said Mancini. “Once we got that out of our heads we were able to play the way we’re capable of playing.”

The Yachtsmen (19-1) couldn’t miss to start the second, hitting nine of its first 11 shots, including three straight 3-pointers. Ryan Rogers hit the first and was quickly followed by Horning. Rogers hit another and it was 19-7 just 1:20 into the second. A drive by Mancini and a cut through the lane by Jahrel Registe finished the 13-0 run that had the Falcons stunned and trying to regroup. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Mancini and Rogers had the lead up to 29-9.

“We get in that rhythm sometimes and there’s not many teams that can stop us,” said Mancini. “We’re an experienced team, and we’ve been playing with each other for a long time. We definitely feed off each other’s energy.”

Falmouth shot 10-for-16 in the second while the Falcons were 5-for-15. Mountain Valley was 8-for-32 in the first half.

“We couldn’t get into a flow,” said White. “We had looks that we wanted but didn’t knock down the shots that we wanted. We tried to push and when we pushed, we had good looks and nothing fell.”

Mountain Valley opened the second with six straight. Kaubris, Adam Bedard and Brady Fergola all scored to cut the lead to 39-23 but a Mancini 3-pointer and back-t0-back baskets by John Roberts and Horning only padded the lead before the Yachtsmen finished the third up 48-28.

“I’m proud of the eight seniors that I had,” said White. “They bought into a new philosophy where we rotated kids all the time. That says a lot for the kids’ character for buying into that.”
