Isadore A. Stearns

1929 – 2010

NORWAY — Isadore Ann Stearns, 80, died Friday, Feb. 19, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

She was born on Feb, 23, 1929, the daughter of Austin and Ida Lowell Stearns. She graduated from Paris High School in 1948 and the University of Maine at Orono in 1952 with a degree in Physical Education. She taught at Acton Boxborough Regional High School in Acton, Mass., from 1952 to 1984. She coached varsity field hockey from 1952 to 1964, varsity basketball from 1952 to 1964, varsity softball from 1953 to 1969 and was the first female athletic director in Massachusetts from 1977 to 1984 when she retired. In October of 2007 the Acton Boxborough School Department named the gym after her.

She is survived by her sisters, Lura Smith of Sun City, Fla., Mary Durgin and her husband, Stanley, of South Paris, Ruth Shephardson of Bangor, Isabelle Foss of Temple and Virginia Barden of Lisbon Falls; a brother, Harry of Whitefield, N.H.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Frances Davis; and two brothers, Roger and Hubert.
