FARMINGTON — Two public hearings on the Selectmen’s agenda Tuesday cover proposed amendments to town ordinances.

When the board meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the town office, the public can respond to a proposal to repeal the board’s ability to accept streets without a town meeting vote and to reduce the number of property owners needed to be notified during an appeal process.

Both are basically housekeeping measures, said Steve Kaiser, code enforcement officer. While working with town ordinances, employees find there may be better ways to perform the work and seek changes, he said.

Under the town’s Streets and Sidewalks Ordinance, the proposed amendment will repeal the board’s authority to accept new streets or roads. The issue would need to come before voters at a town meeting, he said.

The amendment under the Board of Appeals Ordinance reduces the number of property owners who need to be notified during an appeal process from within 500 to 250 feet for town lots.

In rural areas there are not as many properties within 500 feet, but in urban areas the number of people needed to be notified increases and becomes exorbitant and unnecessary, he said.

“People call and ask why they are being notified,” he said.

In other business, the board will again discuss the request to terminate the town’s Front Street parking lot lease with Farmington Construction Inc. A 99-year lease at $1 a year provides excess parking for downtown customers and overnight apartment dwellers in a space next to the Better Living Center.

Owner Greg Roux came before the board last month seeking to end the lease, providing an opportunity for development of the property, which he suggested could create an increase in the town’s tax rolls.

The board will also discuss funding for the Whittier Road sewer main extension project and schedule a special meeting to provide information about the project.

The long agenda also includes an item to use $300 from the town’s Special Projects account to update the Seth Wescott gold medal recognition signs posted at the entrances to town.
