LEWISTON — Mat Gordon zipped up the ice and back down again. Rich Belanger and Alan Nelson spent three periods gobbling up rebounds and turning aside an onslaught of St. Dom’s shots, and the Edward Little defense did what it could to slow the Saints’ steady attack as the shifty forward lines sent wave after wave into the Eddies’ zone.

It didn’t matter, though, as the Saints fulfilled a destiny of sorts Monday, dispatching the pesky Red Eddies to set up a rematch with No. 1 Lewiston on Saturday.

Eight different Saints found the back of the net and Josh Charest stopped 17 shots to lead St. Dom’t to a 12-3 victory over Edward Little on Monday in the Eastern Class A quarterfinal hockey tilt at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

“Obviously they have more depth than we do, they were all fired up and they outplayed us,” Edward Little coach Craig Latuscha said. “The lack of experience hurt us.”

Edward Little, which missed the playoffs with three victories last season, won 14 games during this year’s regular-season campaign, second most among teams in Eastern Class A.

“To come into the Colisee and play a top-tier team like St. Dom’s and lose like this hurts, obviously,” Latuscha said, “but one hockey game isn’t the end of the world. We had a great season this year, putting up 14 wins exceeded our expectations to start the season. The kids played with a lot of heart and a lot of desire this season.”

But all of those victories and all of that heart amounted to very little on the scoreboard Monday, as a young but much more experienced St. Dom’s squad toyed with the Eddies for most of the night. The Saints, the No. 4 seed this season, their first in Eastern A, went to the state final last season where they lost to Waterville.

This time through, the Saints are pulling out plenty of offense. Four players — Alex Parker, Nate Bergeron, Cody Rodrigue and Spencer Martin — had a pair of goals, and four others had a goal each in Monday’s onslaught.

“A lot of people were involved in the offense,” St. Dom’s coach Steve Ouellette said. “A lot of people got to play, no one got hurt. We had to kill a few penalties, unfortunately, but otherwise, I thought we played a pretty good game.”

The Eddies began the night with some solid pressure, and through the first part of the first frame appeared to have a puncher’s chance.

But with each goal the Saints put up on the board in the latter half of the first period, EL’s chances waned.

Parker, Martin, Dylan Rodrigue and Bergeron all scored to put the Saints on top by four. Dylan Nadeau answered for the Eddies to end the period, but the Saints were just getting warmed up.

After the teams traded goals early in the second, during what Ouellette described as his team’s “second-period blues,” Cam Brown and Danny Nadeau got the Saints rolling again.

In the third, the Saints poured it on, scoring another five goals before Mat Gordon netted his second of the game for his 50th point of the season in the game’s closing seconds.

Next up, the Saints will face top-seeded Lewiston in the Eastern Class A semifinal round. According to the Maine Principals’ Association bulletin, the team traveling the most distance among the four semifinal teams will play in the earliest game, at Noon. Likely, that means Lewiston and St. Dom’s will face each other at 2 p.m., in the second game.
