RAYMOND — A 53-year-old man died Monday afternoon after diving into Sebago Lake in an effort to retrieve his ATV that broke through the ice over the weekend.
A news release issued by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office reported that the man — whose name was not being released Monday night pending family notification — may have suffered from a medical event that led to his death. The case is currently being handled as an unattended death and the body has been sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office.
According to authorities, the man dove into the lake in the area off Birch Point in Raymond at about 1:30 p.m. He wasn’t breathing when friends who were there to help pulled him from the water, and attempts to revive the man were made immediately. He was transported to Maine Medical Center by Raymond Rescue, where he was pronounced dead.
The Maine Warden’s Service is assisting the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office in its investigation.
