SUMNER — Selectmen discussed options for ambulance service for the town Tuesday night, acknowledging they have until May 1 to make a decision.
The town has been using Buckfield Rescue and Tri-Town Rescue of West Paris, but since Tri-Town dissolved recently, Med-Care ambulance of Mexico has stepped in to provide service.
Selectman Glen Hinkley reported that West Paris Fire Chief Norm St. Pierre has a plan to revive Tri Town Rescue, but needed a one-time donation of $5,000 from West Paris, Greenwood and Sumner.
Hinkley said West Paris and Greenwood were not interested in using Med-Care, which has taken over for Tri-Town for 90 days.
“We are in limbo at the moment,” Board of Selectmen Chairman Mark Silber said. “The three towns would have to cooperate if we are to have a rescue that is close to our town.” He said the options are to contract with Buckfield Rescue, Pace ambulance in Norway or Med-Care.
Most of the services charge a fee per capita.
West Paris selectmen are meeting Thursday night to discuss ambulance service.
In other business, Silber said selectmen are asking the Fire Department to present proposals for a pumper. There is $95,000 in the firetruck fund, and selectmen’s secretary Cyndy Norton said Fire Chief Bob Stewart said it wouldn’t be enough. Stewart was not at the meeting.
Chris Champagne of Greenwood Fire Apparatus in Brunswick, which deals in used firetrucks, met with the board and the Fire Department recently.
The board said it leans toward a local dealer and not borrowing any money.
Builder Jim Durfee of Sumner is getting information on metal roofing for the town office, and it’s hoped volunteers will install it. Anyone interested in helping should contact Town Clerk Susan Runes so she can be sure they are covered by insurance.
Selectman Mary Ann Haxton said there were six or seven farmers at the last Sumner Farmers Group. The next meeting is March 22 and anyone interested is invited to attend. The group basically gives help and support to each other, Haxton said.
