JAY — Police are looking for a local man who is suspected of being involved in stealing more than $75,000 from an elderly man since 2008, Jay police Chief Larry White Sr. said Wednesday.

Jay police have an arrest warrant for Daren M. McLean, 41, on a felony charge of theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, White said.

A conviction on the charge carries up to 10 years in prison.

Jay officer Mike Mejia and Franklin County Sheriff‘s Detective Tom White conducted a joint investigation into the missing money after family members reported it to police, Chief White said.

McLean moved into the Jay residence of the elderly man in July 2008, alleging that he used to work for him several years prior and needed a place to stay, White said. McLean helped take care of the residence and the man, the chief said.

During the time McLean was staying with the man, he began exploiting him and obtained a large amount of money by taking the man’s checks, writing them out and cashing them at several businesses, White said.

McLean is suspected to have fled the Jay area, and has known family and associates in the Rumford and Lewiston-Auburn areas, the chief said.
