OXFORD — Boxberry students recently traveled to Augusta to serve as pages for the House of Representatives, tour the Maine State Capitol building, meet Gov. Baldacci and visit the Maine State Museum. All of the Boxberry students, grades kindergarten through fifth, delivered notes for the representatives.

One of the students, Emily T. wrote, “Paging was my favorite part because it was fun to dodge the big chairs that the representatives sat in.” Another student, Emily H. wrote, “I liked delivering messages for such an important meeting.”

All of the students took a tour of the Capitol building and their tour guide showed them a few places where there are fossils of shells embedded in the second floor. Students also viewed the “Four Seasons of Maine” dioramas located in the tunnel.

The students also met Baldacci in his office, where he showed the group the Maine State Coat of Arms and asked the students if they knew the meaning of the symbols on it.

They recognized the moose, pine tree, fisherman and farmer. Baldacci then told them the meaning of Dirigo, which is “I direct” or “I guide” and questioned the group about the meaning of the star above the logo.

One of the students gave his idea of the meaning and Baldacci said one day the student might be sitting in the governor’s chair and directed him to do just that, in addition to giving him a wooden pencil that was made in Maine.
