A full season of work has led to this day for schools across the state as they vye for a gold ball in high school basketball.
Twelve schools in three different classes will have the chance to earn one of six gold balls being handed out today at a pair of venues, and a pair of area teams will be among them.
First, at 7 p.m., the Edward Little Red Eddies of Auburn will battle Cheverus at the Cumberland County Civic Center for the Class A boys’ title. Then, at 8:45, the Dirigo Cougars of Dixfield will take on Washington Academy at the Augusta Civic Center for the Class C boys’ crown.
On Friday night, the York girls and Falmouth boys made it a clean sweep for Western Maine in the first two games, each winning a Class B state title.
