I was appalled to read (March 8) about the lawmakers celebrating Franco-American Day on March 17.

I totally understand state Sen. Lisa Marrache’s desire to recognize the importance of the Franco heritage in Maine. My heritage roots are Franco-American on my mother’s side and Irish on my dad’s side.

I am very proud of both, but March 17 has been, for generations, the day to celebrate St. Patrick and the Irish.

If the celebration is meant for lawmakers only, then I guess it makes no difference what day they choose, but should it be considered to be a true Franco-American day in future years, I would hope that a different day would be selected. There are 364 others to choose from.

Would anyone ever consider celebrating Halloween on Dec. 25?
