WASHINGTON, D.C. — Project Learning Tree, the environmental education program of the American Forest Foundation, has announced that it awarded GreenWorks! grants to projects in Maine that support students learning outside and linking up with community partners.
“These grants support Maine students and their teachers who understand the value in working on a common project,” said Pat Maloney, Maine PLT coordinator. “The projects also enable groups of students to do hands-on learning outdoors.”
One of the recipients in Olivia Griset from Lisbon High School, for her Community Organic Garden and Composting Program. Students in field ecology, woodworking and herbs classes are spearheading a project to plan and build a garden. Located between the high school and middle school, it will also serve as a living laboratory and outdoor learning space for other classes at the two schools. Cafeteria wastes will be composted.
