Host of the Thursday morning 91.5 FM WRBC show “The Sam and Sam Show,” Samuel Waterman of Lewiston is also an aspiring musician who recently released his debut album “Compounds — Light Side Dark.” When he’s not on the air, performing or writing music, he’s spending time with his son and daughter. Deep storytelling and vivid exploration through lyrics is how he describes his approach to music.

What do you look for in music? Well, when I begin writing I first aim to capture the specific mood of the ensemble and then devise a topic. Then, I elaborate and break it down the way I see fit, to start shaping the song the way it should be interpreted from the listener’s point of view. I have learned that most thoughts and topics can be very complex, but it is very important to simplify the point that you’re trying to get across in order for your fans to receive it the right way.

When did you start writing your own rhymes? I first started writing my own lyrics at age 13 and I have not stopped since then. I have only evolved into a musical maniac.

What’s the weirdest request you’ve had on your radio show? I think the strangest request that I have had thus far would be “The Safety Dance” by Men Without Hats. It’s even weirder that I had it and was able to play it. If you have a request just give me a call: 777-7915.

“Star Wars” or “Star Trek”? “Star Wars” for sure, but “Star Trek” is cool, too.

What is the most essential element of life? Water, of course. That is where my stage name “The Element” came from. My last name is Waterman and water is the main element of life for man.

Earliest memory with music. Definitely music from the ’80s; Van Halen. Me and my sisters — dancing around all crazy with big black retro sunglasses.

How will you spend the first true summer weather day? Out and about promoting my music, enjoying the weather and constructing my plan of a long summer of shows and touring; play with my daughter and son.

What one thing would you like to see happen with music in Maine? More diversity, which has already been happening. Different kinds of acts being represented in higher quality, because there is a lot of untapped talent up here. I, myself, like to combine and fuse together other genres of music with my medium, hip-hop. Also, get more people involved in the scene, and get word out about upcoming shows and events.

What’s your No. 1 vice? Robbing banks … nah, just kidding. I don’t really have any. I try to stay positive through these hard times. I do occasionally drink socially.

In your opinion, what is the worst invention in pop culture today? Overusage of auto-tune (a computerized voice program that can give any singer perfect pitch), and all these people with these fake images.

Best April Fool’s joke you ever played. Its kinda corny, but putting a whoopee cushion under my mom’s (butt), because, you know, girls just don’t fart, right?

Favorite movie, food, pastime. “Goodfellas” and “Braveheart,” Chinese, video games and music production.
