PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine’s largest city will be getting $1.8 million in federal funds to help fight obesity among students and adults.
Portland schools will receive $500,000 and the rest will be used to jump-start programs to reduce obesity among other city residents.
The Portland Press Herald says officials have until the end of June to give the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention a plan for the money.
The grant requires the money be spent on projects that increase physical activity, improve nutrition and improve infrastructure.
Some of the ideas being considered include creating a bicycle lane downtown, installing bicycle racks around the city or hiring a nutritionist to analyze meals served at local restaurants.
