BRIDGTON — The Fryeburg Police Department will be sponsoring the Maine Criminal Justice Academy’s Law Enforcement Pre-service Training Program in Bridgton starting April 28, for two and a half weeks. Designed to provide the minimum education needed for part-time police officers, constables, reserve officers, and other limited law enforcement positions, the course spans 100 hours and covers topics such as Maine law, legal procedures, police practical skills, defensive tactics, human relations and traffic patrol.

Persons interested in attending the course, which runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily for 13 weekdays, must be at least 21 years old (younger with certain post secondary education requirements), be sponsored — though not necessarily hired — by a law enforcement agency, pass a criminal background investigation, and have no Class D or greater criminal convictions on their records. Other criteria may apply.

Applicants to the program need to first complete an ALERT test, currently scheduled in Westbrook on April 21 and on the first and third Wednesdays at the MCJA in Vassalboro. An appointment for the test must be made first by calling 877-8000, and a $40 fee and photo ID are required.

The fee for the Pre-service Training Program is $375, payable on the first day. Space is limited, and applications must be submitted early to ensure acceptance. A limited number of lodging rooms on-site will be available for greatly-reduced rates.
