CASCO, Maine (AP) — A member of a Maine town board of selectmen has apologized, but won’t resign, for forwarding an e-mail that contained an image of Michelle Obama that many considered to be racist.

Casco selectman Barbara York offered the apology at a Monday meeting in the town firehouse.

The board voted 3-1 in favor of censuring York.

At the meeting, a town resident who said he was enraged when he learned York had forwarded the e-mail and then demanded her resignation said he had spoken with her and forgave her.

The Portland Press Herald says most people in the audience stood and applauded after Antonio Jackson asked everyone “to stand with me in forgiveness.”

In a statement, York said she was sorry she had offended some members of the community.
