AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Unable to pass a bond package that includes funds to preserve a key northern Maine railroad, Maine lawmakers are now poised to negotiate a bond issue before returning to the State House on Monday.
Lawmakers are taking a few days to cool off after a party-line vote Wednesday night in the Senate came up short of the minimum needed to send an $85 million bond package to voters. The House earlier gave its final approval.
The negotiations are likely to take place between Senate Democrats and Republicans. Any package that might result from talks would likely be much smaller than $85 million and include as a major component funds to buy and preserve 233 miles of railroad track that’s being abandoned in Aroostook County.
