AUBURN – Fifteen local, seasoned actors will present a stage adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” as they represent Community Little Theatre in the Maine Association of Community Theaters 2010 One-Act Play Festival.
“Lottery” is directed by Liz Rollins, a CLT actress and assistant director, who will make her directorial debut with this performance in the statewide competition to be held April 24 at Lincoln Street Center for Arts and Education in Rockland.
Rollins is the music and drama teacher at Auburn Middle School and most recently appeared in CLT’s production of “Winter Wonderettes.”
The public is invited to a preview performance at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, at CLT’s Great Falls Center for the Arts.
This show is free; however, donations will be accepted to help defray the cost of getting the all-volunteer cast and crew to Rockland for the MeACT competition.
Cast members are Alice Ruvane, Cheryl Reynolds, Phil Vampatella, Will Proulx, Jackie McDonald, Jonathan Carr, Janet Gibson, Bruce Gerry, Duncan Gelder, Jen Dubois, and Dante, Luka, Robert and Sophie Baskett. All have appeared previously on the CLT stage. The stage manger is Debbie Reynolds.
First published in The New Yorker in 1948, “The Lottery” is considered one of the most haunting and shocking short stories of modern American fiction. The story takes place on a June morning in the town square of a small village.
The impact of the story’s unexpected ending is intensified by Jackson’s detached narrative style and the serene setting in which the story takes place. After publishing the story, The New Yorker received hundreds of letters and telephone calls from readers expressing disgust, consternation. and curiosity. Jackson herself received letters concerning ”The Lottery” until the time of her death.
Most critics view the story as a modern-day parable or fable that addresses a variety of themes: the dark side of human nature, the subjugation of women, the danger of ritualized behavior and the potential for cruelty when an individual submits to the tyranny of the status quo.
