AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands has reversed itself on a proposal to impose fees to visit Mackworth Island and Kettle Cove, two popular parks outside of Portland.
The bureau backed away from the controversial plan at the request of Gov. John E. Baldacci.
Instead of charging visitors, the bureau will install receptacles for voluntary payments. Fees still will be required to be paid at Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site in New Harbor.
At Colonial Pemaquid, fees will be collected for those visiting the museum, the Fort House and the Fort William Henry area, but not for use of the boat ramp or restaurant.
