LEWISTON — At a recent meeting of the Franco-American Heritage Center board of directors, Raymond J. Lagueux was elected president of the board of directors. He has been on the board since 2004. Other members elected to office were vice president, Laurent F. Gilbert Sr.; secretary, Michel Courchesne; and treasurer, Paul Vallée.

Lagueux is a Lewiston native, graduate of Lewiston High School. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in modern languages at Providence College, R.I., and a master of arts degree in French language and literature from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.

He was responsible for re-introducing the study of foreign languages (French and German) at the University of Maine, Farmington, in 1969. In 1975, Lagueux was the resident director of the Providence-in-Europe Study Abroad Program in Fribourg, Switzerland. Upon return to the U.S., Lagueux continued his teaching career as an adjunct instructor of French at the Lewiston-Auburn campus of University of Maine, Augusta, and Lewiston-Auburn College.

He has offered refresher courses in French at Lewiston Adult Education and a business French course at LAC. He was a board member of the Franco-Center under the direction of Dr. Norman and Joanne Lapointe and while an instructor at LAC, he was appointed chair of the Franco-American Advisory Council by Dean Betty Robinson.

Since 1976, Lagueux has worked in marketing and sales, including a two-year project with the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce for the Forum Francophone des Affaires. He currently works in the woman-owned family manufacturing business, O’Brien Consolidated Industries, with his wife Susan. They are the parents of two adult children, Angélique and Robert.
