The “Scarlet Letters” explore their options during the 12th annual Letters for Literacy Scrabble Fest at the Fireside Inn & Suites in Auburn on Sunday. Twenty-two teams from all over Maine competed to raise money for Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin, a program that provides free tutoring to help adults with reading, writing and math skills, said Director Tahlia Chamberlain. Funds were still being counted, but Chamberlain said the 2009 festival raised $4,500. “This really helps us out financially,” said Chamberlain. But more importantly, the event raises awareness of what Literacy Volunteers provides, said Chamberlain. “There is a waiting list for all of our services. We are in dire need of volunteers,” Chamberlain said. “Scarlet Letters” teammates, from left, are Pam Beliveau of Lewiston, Peggy Deblois of Auburn, Maryann Lanzieri of Auburn and Liz Henry, also of Auburn.
