PORTLAND — On Wednesday, May 5, Portland Ovations will present Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, a contemporary ballet company that has made a name for itself in the dance world by performing inventive works by today’s foremost choreographers.
Aspen Santa Fe Ballet possesses the grace and elegance of a classical ballet and couples it with an eclectic repertoire of new works.
Its May 5 program will include an imaginative reconstuction of Twyla Tharp’s 1975 ballet “Sue’s Leg,” set to the music of Fats Waller; Jorma Elo’s “Red Sweet;” William Forsythe’s “Slingerland;” and Moses Pendleton’s “Noir Blanc.”
Ovations Offstage will host a master class for intermediate and advanced dancers with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Executive Director Jean-Philippe Malaty at the Portland Ballet Company from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on May 5. Interested dancers should contact Barri Lynn Moreau, director of education and outreach, at 773-3150 for registration.
Aspen Santa Fe Ballet will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Merrill Auditorium.
Tickets range from $30 to $38, and are $10 for students. They may be obtained at PortTix, the Merrill Auditorium box office; by calling 842-0800; or online at www.portlandovations.org.
Immediately preceding the performance, dance scholar Eugenia O’Brien from the Portland Ballet Company will discuss “Sue’s Leg,” in Merrill’s Green Room.
