LEWISTON — A Renovation Repair and Painting Course will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 7, at The Bank of America Room at St. Mary’s Hospital.

The course is designed to inform landlords and contractors how to perform maintenance safely on homes with lead-based paint. Preregistration is required by calling Environmental Management Inc. at 729-7549 and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Courses are limited to 20 participants each.

Under the new EPA Lead Rule, which goes into effect on April 22, contractors performing projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities and schools built before 1978 must be certified by an RRP Course. During the course, contractors will learn specific work practices to prevent lead contamination and other requirements of meeting this EPA Rule.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection is offering vouchers for the course. Each voucher has a $70 value to be put toward the course fee. The landlord is responsible for paying the remaining $25.

Vouchers are available for any landlord that participates in the Landlord Lead Assistance Program or Lead Program and for landlords that have an owner-occupied multi-family building. Call Healthy Androscoggin at 795-5990 to request a voucher.

The course compliments lead poisoning prevention efforts in Lewiston and Auburn led by the Lead Safe Community Committee and the Healthy Homes Healthy Families partnership which include numerous partners including: city staff, social service providers and local public health professionals.
