Walton Elementary School Principal Michelle McClellan, left, and parent Ellery Hewey, in orange, smooth out a raised garden bed in front of the Auburn school on Earth Day as they and other Walton school families helped to install 16 gardens Thursday. “If it had been up to me and the teachers here, it would have been a small plot and we wouldn’t have reached into the community like Diana (Carson) has,” said McClellan, about the PTO member and mother who wrote grants for the project. “She dreamed big.” The project will supply fresh fruits and vegetables for snack time at the school and will hopefully be allowed to add to the salad bar during lunchtime. It will also provide for learning in the outdoors with the butterfly garden, the hummingbird garden and the alphabet garden, dedicated to retiring school counselor Margaret Lane. The project was funded in large part by a $5,000 grant from Lowes and $1,000 from the L-A Children’s Home. They also received donations from the Woman’s Literary Union, Lamey-Wellehan Shoes, the Pine Tree Gardens and the SHARE Center.
