SOUTH PARIS – Maine Veterans’ Home recently presented a plaque to memorialize the outstanding efforts of the late Col. Myron H. Pierce, who passed away last May. Pierce’s son, Michael, and daughter, Cynthia, spoke at the ceremony of the many accomplishments of their father, including his service in World War II and the Korean War where he was awarded the Purple Heart, the Silver Star and the Bronze Star.

About 100 of Pierce’s family and friends filled the home’s multi-purpose room where Michael and Cynthia, both accomplished musicians, performed “Lilli Marlene,” a song that Pierce had first heard sung by German troops while he was conducting a combat patrol during World War II.

Pierce’s sister, Maxine Roak, provided special memories. Maine Veterans’ Home Chief Operations Officer, and former MVH – South Paris Administrator, Pat Young talked about his influence on the establishment of the home. The Downeast Brass Quintet provided a number of entertaining melodies from the 1930s and 1940s.

“Myron was such a unique individual and he contributed in so many ways to this area,” said Joel Dutton, administrator at MVH – South Paris. “We are very happy to be able to honor him in this fashion.”

The plaque, which reads “In Memory of Colonel Myron H. Pierce, 1921 – 2009 For his Selfless Service and Outstanding Contributions to his Nation, Community, Fellow Veterans and the Maine Veterans’ Homes,” will be posted in the entryway of the home.

Pierce was a teacher in the area and was involved in community activities as well as being a constant veterans’ advocate. He was a key player in establishing a Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris in the late 1980s and early 1990s and he served on the board of trustees. The home opened its doors in 1995 where Pierce would become a resident almost 10 years later.

Even in his final days Pierce served his community. Many friends and family reflected on how he would collect bottles and cans on a regular basis for a number of worthy causes while he was at the home.
