FARMINGTON — The Franklin Volunteer Network, a collaborative of area organizations and individuals who promote volunteer opportunities and support the volunteer sector through training and communication, has announced volunteer celebration event. The event will be an opportunity to honor the energy and dedication of hundreds of volunteers throughout Greater Franklin County.

The celebration will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 20, at the Farmington Grange in West Farmington.

The event will allow organizations the opportunity to recognize, in a community setting, their volunteers collectively. Each volunteer attending will receive a Certificate of Appreciation and individual organizations will have the opportunity to recognize their own volunteers.

The Shining Star Award will be presented to a veteran volunteer (10 years or more served) and the Rising Star Award will be given to a new volunteer.

The celebration will also kickoff a volunteer challenge, with a goal to reach 250,000 volunteer hours served in Greater Franklin County in the year 2010.

The meal will be potluck style. Attendees are asked to bring a dish to share and the Franklin Volunteer Network will provide paper goods, a dessert bar and beverages. Support for the event comes from the United Way of the Tri-Valley Area, the Maine Commission for Community Service and Maine Community Foundation.
