Joseph ‘Joe’ B. M. Mathieu

1931 – 2010

LEWISTON — Joseph (Joe) B. M. Mathieu, 78, of 205 Lisbon Road, Sabattus, died Friday, April 23, at the Marshwood Nursing Home in Lewiston.

Born in Lewiston on May 11, 1931, he was the son of George P. and Exilda Bolduc Mathieu. Educated in local schools, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On May 31, 1952, he married the former Georgette L. Martel. Prior to his retirement, he worked for many years as a mechanic and service manager for several area car dealerships. He was a member of Holy Cross Church, where he was a frequent communicant, and for 15 years he served on the board of Holy Cross Credit Union. Always good with his hands, he built his own house, and, over the course of nine years, hand-fabricated his own tractor, affectionally called the “Pope-mobile” by his family. Joe was happiest when surrounded by his family. He was loved by everyone who knew him, and he will be sadly missed.

Besides his loving wife of Sabattus; he is survived by two sons, Daniel and wife, Diane, of Wales; Claude and wife, Pauline, of Lisbon; four daughters, Monita and husband, John Bell, of Ballground, Ga., Diane of Turner, Janet of Lewiston and Lisa and husband, Robert Paquette, of Sanford; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents; he was predeceased by two brothers, Noel and Vincent Mathieu; and seven sisters, Wilhemine Quirion, Anne Grenier, Clarisse Leclair, Simonne Biron, Jeanne d’Arc Gosselin, Sister Marie France Mathieu of the White Sisters and Sister Hermance Mathieu of the Presentation of Mary.

The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of the Marshwood Care Facility and the staff of Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice.
