CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Tee time returns earlier than usual this spring on the back nine at the Sugarloaf Golf Club, along with the added kick of more time on the slopes.
To close out the final weekend of its 2009-10 ski season on Saturday and Sunday, May 1 and 2, Sugarloaf is offering a ski and golf deal for $25 on both Saturday and Sunday, spokesman Ethan Austin stated in a Monday report.
“The course has come through the winter in some of the best shape we’ve ever seen, and we thought this would be a fun and unique way to cap off what has been a great winter season,” said Marketing and Sales Director Brad Larsen.
“It’s not often that a resort can offer lift-serviced skiing and golf in the same day.”
Guests can either ski in the morning and play nine holes of golf in the afternoon, or vice versa, Austin added.
The $25 deal is for the general public. Austin said it’s $10 for anyone with a lift ticket or New England Pass valid for either of those days.
Offering skiing and riding on 24 trails serviced by two lifts, Sugarloaf is currently the only ski resort still open east of Colorado. Spring lift tickets are $35 for all ages through season’s end on Sunday.
“It’s definitely spring skiing,” Austin said early Tuesday afternoon. “It’s thin and there are some bare spots, but our two main trails — Narrow Gauge and Skidder — are completely covered, wall to wall.”
Additionally, Mother Nature is expected to powder in some icing on the cake, with 7 to 12 inches of new snow in the forecast for Tuesday night and Wednesday, Austin said of an incoming storm.
“But it’s going to be 70 degrees this weekend,” he said.
Austin said the May 1 date marks one of the earliest times in the golf club’s 25-year history that the course has been playable.
Holes 10 through 15 — the back nine — feature the world famous “String of Pearls,” which run along the West Branch of the Carrabassett River and feature elevated tee boxes and one of New England’s most unique golf experiences, Austin said.
Maintenance crews are currently irrigating the back nine. The front nine holes aren’t ready yet.
“The back nine tends to perk up quicker than the front nine, but I don’t know why that is,” Austin said.
Following the Ski and Tee Weekend, the course will close and reopen on May 28, its scheduled opening date.
