LEWISTON — For the fourth consecutive year, Lewiston will hold a lottery for the prekindergarten program, a two-day program that runs Monday through Thursday with 14 children in each session.

Due to a limited number of spaces in the program, the school department is unable to accommodate all of the children whose parents have expressed an interest in the program. Beginning in the fall of 2010, there will be a prekindergarten program in five of the elementary schools in Lewiston. Students living in the Martel School district will register for the lottery at Farwell.

Registration will take place anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. from May 17 to 21, at the Dingley Building, 36 Oak St. Although the lottery will be held in a public forum, a child will not be excluded if parents are unable to attend the lottery. To be eligible for the lottery, a child’s fourth birthday must be between Oct. 16, 2009 and Oct. 15, 2010.

Informational meetings will take place as follows:

Geiger School: Wednesday, May 12, at 6 p.m., in the school cafeteria.

Longley School: Tuesday, May 11, at 2 p.m., in the school cafeteria.

To register for the lottery or for more information, call 795-4105 or e-mail Pat Kordalski at pkordalski@lewistonpublicschools.org or Jeanie Giroux at jgiroux@lewistonpublicschools.org.

Parents should include the child’s name, date of birth, address, phone number and parents’ or guardians’ names. Children will be selected based on their home address. Children not selected for the lottery will be placed on a wait list in the order in which their names are drawn in the lottery.

The actual lotteries will take place on Friday, May 28, in each school’s prekindergarten room, unless otherwise noted:

Longley School, 2 p.m.; Farwell and Martel, 12:30 p.m.; Geiger, 10:30 a.m.; Montello, 8:30 a.m.; McMahon, 2 p.m., in the school library.

Attendance at the lottery is not required.
