BANGOR, Maine (AP) — An expansion of gambling was a big topic among the four Democratic candidates for Maine governor during a debate in Bangor.
Three of the four — Pat McGowan, Libby Mitchell and Steve Rowe — said Monday they don’t support the proposal for a resort casino in Oxford County. The fourth candidate, Rosa Scarcelli, said the casino’s up to voters to decide. A referendum will be on the November ballot.
All four of the candidates at the Husson University forum urged voters to oppose a people’s veto proposal on the June ballot to repeal Maine’s tax overhaul law, which lowers the income tax rate but expands the sales tax to more goods and services.
Seven Republicans are seeking their party’s gubernatorial nomination in the June 8 primary.
