RUMFORD — A 28-year-old Rumford man was arrested early Monday morning and charged with breaking into an Essex Avenue apartment, assaulting the occupant and stealing items.

Carl J. Ryerson is charged with assault, burglary, theft and criminal threatening in connection with the incident, Sgt. Tracey Higley said.

Detective Sgt. James Bernard said in a press release that Cpl. Scott Mills and Patrolman Lawrence Winson responded to the theft complaint and found the 54-year-old owner had been assaulted. The man told police he heard a knock on his apartment door and when he unlocked the dead bolt, the door was forced open by a man.

” The suspect began choking the victim, demanding drugs and money, threatening to kill him if he didn’t follow his instructions,” Bernard said. “After a brief struggle, the victim gave the suspect his wallet and a small amount of marijuana,” The suspect also took the man’s cell phone as he fled the residence, he said, and identified him as Ryerson.

Ryerson was arrested and led police to the man’s property, the detective said. Ryerson was released on $2,000 unsecured bail and is scheduled to appear in Oxford County Superior Court in South Paris on July 16.
