AUBURN — A new version of the city’s Comprehensive Plan promotes new development in town and around developed areas, protects the undeveloped parts of the city and encourages special protection of the Lake Auburn and Taylor Pond watersheds.

Members of the Auburn Comprehensive Plan Update Committee will host a public hearing on the plan and a New Auburn Master Plan at 6 p.m. Thursday at Auburn Hall. Copies of the plan are available at the Planning and Permitting Office. An electronic version is available for download on the city’s website, www.auburnmaine.org.

City councilors will begin their review of the plan in June.

The city’s last plan was written in 1995 and designed to guide planning and development decisions through 2005. It looked at all aspects of life in the city, including population, transportation trends, possible commercial development and public finances.

Work on the current plan began in July 2007 with a group of 40 volunteers.

The new plan includes sections recommending new bicycle and pedestrian development and planning for passenger rail service.
