AUBURN — When it rained, it poured.

While Mother Nature provided one kind of downpour Saturday afternoon, the St. Dom’s lacrosse team showered the opposition in another way to stay unbeaten.

With a tie game early in the first quarter, the Saints offense opened up and poured it on with four goals in less than two minutes. St. Dom’s never looked back in a convincing 15-3 win over Mt. Blue.

“It really comes down to us moving the ball,” said St. Dom’s Tim Day, who finished with three goals and five assists. “That’s the biggest thing. We get stagnant, and we try to get our own shots, but when we start working with each other, it really gets going.”

Trevar Haefele led the Saints with five goals and two assists. Matt Adams also had three goals. Mt. Blue got one two from Ethan Kyes and one from Dillon Burnham.

The Saints scored  four goals in the last three-plus minutes of the opening quarter, turning a 1-1 game into a 5-1 lead. The Cougars couldn’t answer, and St. Dom’s kept rolling with eight more in the second for a 13-1 lead at the half.

“The offense settled down and didn’t force the ball quite so much,” said St. Dom’s coach Dave Haefele. “It was just a matter of getting it to the offense that we tried in practice.”

After two close wins over Gardiner (5-4) and Morse (16-14), the Saints have outscored opponents 52-13 in the last three games and have tests with Camden and Gorham coming next week.

“We had two close games,” said Haefele, whose team is atop the Eastern B standings. “We could be 3-2 but things worked out for us, and the team really came through in those games. We see those teams (Gardiner and Morse) again. So it will be tough to have three easy games going into those. Hopefully, we can be prepared for them. Hopefully, we won’t get too complacent.” 

The Saints wasted little time getting on the board Saturday. Trevar Haefele burst downfield and scored just 19 seconds into the game. The Cougars (1-5) were able to answer with a Kyes goal with 8:15 left in the quarter. Day set up Haefele to break the tie with 3:49 left. Then Day scored back-to-back goals 42 seconds apart. Adams added one with 2:08 left for the 5-1 lead.

“A lot of it is just getting out the game-day jitters,” said Day. “We have a lot of young guys that are big contributors. They get some nerves, but once they get out there for a few minutes, they get settled into it.”

The Saints picked up where they left off in the second quarter. Haefele scored twice to start. Adams followed with his second goal and the lead continued to expand.  Haefele had three goals in the quarter while Adams had a pair to make it 13-1.

Haefele and Nick Hatfield scored in the third to make it 15-1. The Cougars got tallies in the final quarter from Kyes and Burnham. St. Dom’s keeper Cody Rodrigue made a number of nice saves in goal and finished with 15 saves. Mt. Blue’s goalie Dillon Gustis finished with 12 saves as the Saints outshot the Cougars 37-33.

“We haven’t done anything, yet,” said Day. “We have a lot to prove.”
