Several factual errors were made by Denis Bergeron of the Maine Public Utilities Commission in his letter of May 2.

All Bergeron’s assertions can be easily refuted, but I will address two here: that I am funded by “Big Oil,” and that the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change is scientific.

I have never received funding from ExxonMobil, and neither has the Science and Public Policy Institute.

I am the co-author of the paper noted by Mr. Dwight, “Surface Temperature Records: Policy-Driven Deception,” commissioned by SPPI, not the organization Bergeron wrongly cited.

However, Big Oil has given $23 million to the Hadley Climate Research Unit, ground zero for climate-gate and the source for the IPCC report’s “scientific data.”

Despite massive funding from Big Oil, the CRU admitted “no uniform data integrity.” The CRU’s director, Phil Jones, admitted his surface temperature data are in such disarray it cannot be verified or replicated. NASA and NOAA use the same faulty database as CRU.

Big Oil has given more than $600 million to U.S. universities. Perhaps we could some get scientific objectivity if some of the money went to independent organizations such as SPPI.

Is the IPCC report 100 percent peer-reviewed? No. Of the 18,500 sources cited in the IPCC report, 5,600 were not peer-reviewed. The IPCC cites press releases, newspaper and magazine clippings, newsletters and literature published by green advocacy groups.

IPCC is a political organization, misusing science to achieve political ends.

I hope this counters Bergeron’s local example of policy-driven deception.
