LEWISTON — Lewiston has been selected as “one of 10 spotlight cities” that will be featured in a video toolkit related to an April 22 Earth Day panel discussion hosted by Mayor Laurent F. Gilbert Sr.

The toolkit will share local messages from constituents and elected officials on a global level, according to a release issued by City Hall on Friday.

“Along with Gilbert, Lewiston’s panel participants joined over 500 elected officials worldwide in constructive dialogue about a sustainable future,” the release stated. “The various conversations commemorated the 40th anniversary of the original Earth Day, a worldwide nonpartisan day of learning and activism on behalf of the planet.”

Mia Colson, Earth Day Network’s Global Day of Conversation deputy director said the city’s decision to hold the panel discussion “speaks to (the city’s) dedication to community development and environmental advocacy, the growth of local economies through green industry, renewable energy strategies, public transportation practices and responsible conservation methods.”

“For Lewiston to be selected as a city that will now be heard around the world — it is clear that Lewiston continues to set the pace,” Gilbert said.”The panelists who participated locally were experienced, insightful and very professional in their discussion of topics that give all of us much to think about. These worldwide conversations will no doubt result in a tangible increase in environmental awareness and action in communities across the globe.”

 Panelists for Lewiston’s conversation included Bates professor Michael J. Retelle; Bruce Damon, chairman of Lewiston’s Energy Saving Committee; Ian Houseal, special assistant to the city administrator; local business owner/environmental advocate Jim Wellehan; and Paul Caron, School Department facility manager.
