DIXFIELD — Five of the local area fire departments were called to a structure fire early Wednesday morning at the Irving Forest Products Inc. wood mill.

However, mill employees contained and extinguished it before any firefighters arrived.

Dixfield fire Chief Scott Dennett said Wednesday that shortly after midnight, a piece of wood jammed in the planer machine. Friction from rollers caused fire to erupt.

“At one point, they had an active fire in the planer room,” Dennett said.

A mill employee, who perhaps heard mill radio traffic about a fire, then called 911, Dennett said.

Dixfield, East Dixfield, Mexico, Peru and Rumford fire departments responded in automatic mutual-aid to the structure fire call, but were turned away on arrival, because the fire was out.

Dennett said Dixfield firefighters checked the area with a thermal imaging camera to ensure hot spots weren’t missed.

“It was a good precautionary measure for them to call [911] and get someone on the way,” Dennett said.
