SKOWHEGAN, Maine (AP) — A jury is deciding the fate of a 22-year-old Augusta, Maine, man who’s been tried on charges related to a machete attack that maimed two members of a Pittston family two years ago.
Daniel Fortune is accused of attempted murder and other charges in the home-invasion attack on William Guerrette Jr.; and his daughter, Nicole, who was 10 at the time. Twenty-year-old Leo Hylton, Fortune’s former roommate, has already pleaded guilty in the case and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
In closing arguments Friday, Fortune’s lawyer Pam Ames told jurors that Fortune didn’t know that a violent attack was planned when he rode with Hylton to the Guerrette home the night of the attacks in May 2008. Ames asked the jurors to drop all charges except violating conditions of release.
