CANTON — Tom Carroll, project coordinator for Patriot Renewables wind energy company, told selectmen Thursday night that the Planning Board has approved of a tower on Canton Mountain to see if there is enough wind to produce 18 to 20 megawatts of power.

If there is, it could mean that 9 to 10 windmills will be built there, he said.

The test tower will be 198 feet tall and require about an acre of land on the south side of the mountain, which is 1,542 feet above sea level and located in the northeast section of town. The land is privately owned, Carroll said.

Carroll said each turnbine requires two acres, but stressed that the project is in the preliminary stages

Patriot Renewables of Quincy, Mass., is a partner in the Beaver Ridge Wind farm project in Freedom, which is east of Waterville. The site has three turbines producing enough electricity each year to power 2,000 homes, according to the company website: http://www.patriotrenewables.com.

In other business Thursday night, the board voted to hire Mark Blanchette to mow town properties. He also volunteered to mow at the transfer station. Station attendant Jim Dyment said there wasn’t time for him to mow.

Dyment asked for permission to turn away people without dump stickers on Saturday, but the board wanted to get the information to people to give them more time to comply.

Selectman Jackie Conant said the Recreation Committee has bought a used snack shack for $300.
