MONMOUTH – The Winthrop Red Sox rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on the strength of aggressive base running and stayed unbeaten in Pine Tree League senior baseball with a 6-3 victory over the Pittsfield Pirates.
Pittsfield (0-3) took a 3-1 lead in the fourth by way of three unearned runs. Ryan White delivered the key hit with an RBI single.
In the top of the eighth, trailing 4-3, the Pirates threatened again with back-to-back, one-out singles from Scott Sibley and Darin Spack. The would-be rally ended when shortstop Sam Shain gobbled up White’s ground ball up the middle to trigger a double play.
Winthrop (3-0) added two insurance runs in the bottom of the frame. Josh Nichols and Torey Carr each reached safely before a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch and a suicide squeeze accounted for the runs.
Sibley suffered the tough-luck loss from the mound despite 11 strikeouts and no free passes. Carr notched his second win in as many starts this season.
Nichols, Shain and Brett Witherell each were multiple hitters for the Red Sox. Sibley was the only repeat offender for the Pirates.
