MEXICO — Selectmen signed a 13-month lease with Lutheran Social Services of New England for a section of the former SAD 43 central office Wednesday night.

This is the first activity the town has had to generate income from the building since it was turned over to the town nearly a year ago.

Town Manager John Madigan said the Wellesley, Mass.-based social service organization will pay $1,075 per month for use of half the office space on the second floor.

“This is a good start,” Madigan said.

During the first year, the town will spend about $10,000 for upkeep on the building, which is adjacent to the Mexico Recreation Building.

Local Realtor Anthony Delulio recruited the agency, and will continue to look for other businesses that may lease a portion of the space.

The building remains on the market. If a suitable buyer is found, the tenant will have 60 days to vacate.

The board also approved a 12-month lease for rental of a portion of the Mexico Recreation Building by Tammy Parent, who will teach baton lessons. The monthly rent for use of the former police chief’s office and police conference room will be $200.

Parent’s classes will join others offered at the recreation building including piano, dance and performing arts, as well as Generations, which is a gym. RSU 10 also uses the gym and periodic aerobics classes are also held at the building.

Madigan said the town receives between $30,000 and $40,000 a year in rent. The town appropriates about $50,000 a year for the building’s upkeep.
