At a recent Hebron Historical Society meeting, historian Ben Conant, pictured, detailed the major fires of Hebron Village and Academy since the early days of the school. The home of school founder Deacon William Barrows succumbed to fire in 1814 and was replaced with a brick structure, which is present today. In 1819, the original school building, used also for church services, burned and was replaced with the Meeting House, the present Hebron Community Baptist Church, in 1820. In 1899, the large Trustee house burned. One year later, the Bellevue building which housed students as well as a store and barber shop was destroyed by fire. Photos and accounts of each structure discussed were displayed. The society’s next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at the town office. The program will feature Greg Sherwood of Oxford, who will describe his metal detecting hobby. The public is invited.
