Wendy Berube, left, of the Androscogging Head Start program, and Jackie Pare, Lewiston schools assistant special education director, box up donated books following the Ready Read celebration and awards breakfast held at the Green Ladle in Lewiston on Friday. The Yellow School Award was presented to six individuals for their contributions to the reading program, Kathy stead, Pam Riley Osborn, Joanne Dupuis, Gordon Harris, Eric Bonawitz and Advocates for children. Guest speaker for the event was Rick Small, director of the Good Shepherd Food-Band, and special reader Thomas Jumper, a Montello School fifth-grader. The Ready Read program is a community-wide effort to spread awareness of the benefits of early literacy. The program has a goal of collecting 1,000 books to benefit 100 families with children’s reading material. Book collection locations are Shaw’s stores in Lewiston and Auburn and also Lewiston and Auburn Hannaford stores.
