AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The deadline is closing in for Maine voters to change their political party affiliations before the June 8 primary election.

The Secretary of State’s office says Mainers who are now enrolled as a Democrat, Republican or Green Independent have until the end of Monday to change their party affiliations before the upcoming primary. Residents can vote in a party primary only if they are enrolled in that party.

Unenrolled voters and people not registered to vote can join one of the three parties any time, including the day of the primary.

The most closely watched races on June 8 will be the Democratic and Republican gubernatorial primaries. There are four Democrats and seven Republicans vying for their parties’ nominations.
