I can think of no good reason why voters in Oxford County would choose to allow the county commissioners to appoint the county treasurer, since it has been an elected position in the past.
It appears that the commissioners — with the exception of one — would like to gain control of the function of the treasurer. That would bypass the usual constraints on officials elected every four years by the voting public. Instead of being responsible to the large group of Oxford County voters, the treasurer would be responsible to the very small group of county commissioners.
A “no” vote June 8 would leave the responsibility with the voters, not with the commissioners.
