AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The executive director of Maine’s largest hunting and fishing organization is stepping down.
George Smith will continue to lead the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine through the end of the year while his successor becomes familiar with the job.
The group hopes to name Smith’s replacement by July 1.
The 62-year-old Smith tells the Bangor Daily News he wants cut back on his time in the office so he can spend more time hunting and fishing.
Smith has led the Alliance since 1993. During that time Smith has become a well-known advocate for the interests of Maine’s hunting and fishing community, although his positions have at times conflicted with those of other groups.
