The luxury and safety of ocean travel in contrast with what our forefathers were obliged to stand when crossing the ocean was depicted last evening by words and steriopticon views at City Hall where James A. Burns, traveling agent of the Cunard Line, spoke under the auspices of the Lewiston & Auburn Merchants’ Association. Mr. Burns was introduced by Cornelius J. Cronin, president of the Merchants’ Association.

50 years ago, 1960

Lewiston police have recovered three speakers taken Friday night from the Lewiston Drive-In Theater on Sabattus Road and plan court action against an 18-year-old Auburn teenager, the alleged thief.

Ray D. Thayer, manager of the theater, noted the theft of two speakers and reported it to the police. Investigation by police turned up three speakers, which they reported the Auburn young man had dismantled with the intention of hooking them up to his automobile.

25 years ago, 1985

In a unanimous public vote, the Maine Liquor Commission Tuesday reaffirmed a week-old decision to revoke the Hotel Holly’s liquor license, based on its view that the Lewiston nightspot doesn’t operate as a hotel.

The commission voted to deny the license but withheld its action from the public pending notification of Holly owner Henry Hollis.

But until Hollis is provided with written notice of the commission’s decision, the Holly will remain open. Once the notice is received, the Holly must close the doors of its Leopard Room Lounge, which features exotic dancers.
