PORTLAND (AP) — Three Maine newspapers have given their endorsements in the June 8 gubernatorial primary elections to Republican Steve Abbott and Democrat Pat McGowan.

The Maine Sunday Telegram, the Kennebec Journal and the Morning Sentinel published their endorsements Sunday.

The three papers are owned by the same company, MaineToday Media Inc.

In supporting Abbott, the papers said he has the combination of “experience, skill and leadership that the people of Maine are looking for” in a governor. Abbott is one of seven Republicans running in the primary to be the party’s choice in November’s general election.

As for McGowan, one of four Democrats in the primary, the papers said he has the “best blend of policy positions, political skill and leadership” to lead the state.
