HOLLIS— Adena H. Smith, 93, of River Road in Hollis, passed away on May 31, at the home she was born in, surrounded by her close friends and caretakers.
She was born on April 22, 1917, a daughter of the late Guy and Mary (Boulter) Smith. Adena attended Hollis schools and graduated from Hollis High School in 1934 and went on to graduate from Gorham State Teachers College and the University of New Hampshire. She later earned a master’s degree.
She was a mathematics teacher at Shadagee School in Buxton, Portsmouth schools, Morse High School in Bath, and Deering High School in Portland. Later, she received excellence awards for her years of teaching and caring for her students.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Rebekahs, the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, and many other organizations and clubs.
She enjoyed sports — especially baseball and basketball games at the schools she taught at. At these games, she sold tickets and was instrumental in the organization of the school sport functions. She also enjoyed traveling, watching hockey games, playing cribbage, solitaire and was known for her “play to win” approach in bridge.
She is survived by her cousin and caretaker, Mike Griffin of Gorham; and all of the other caretakers, distant relatives and friends that supported her over the years.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Hilma Bean and Lucy Smith.
