OXFORD — Four men are competing for two seats on the Board of Selectmen in Tuesday’s town elections.

James H. Goforth, Stephen R. McAllister, Scott M. Owens and Richard E. Varney are running for two three-year openings on the board.

Goforth and Owens currently serve on the board. Town Manager Michael Chammings said Owens has been a selectman for six years, while Goforth has held the position for three years.

McAllister is the former town manager of Paris, working there from 1998 to 2004. Varney was elected selectman in 1992 to serve the remaining two years of a term vacated by a resignation.

Olive H. Sanborn and Ronald Kugell, who currently serve on the Board of Directors of the Oxford Hill School District, are running unopposed for three-year terms. Tom A. Kennison is also running unopposed for re-election to a three-year stint on the Board of Trustees of the Oxford Water District.

Voters will decide whether to amend the mass gathering ordinance, as recommended by the selectmen. These changes include allowing annual permits to frequent applicants and giving more authority to emergency personnel in the matter. Chammings said a comprehensive review of the ordinance is planned for next year.

“The basics of that is to allow more review by the fire chief and the rescue chief,” he said of the changes proposed this year.

Selectmen also recommend passage of an article to make the fire chief’s position an appointed one to “set minimum qualifications” for the position. If passed, selectmen will begin appointing the fire chief in the 2012 election cycle. Chammings said the article was to be included in last year’s elections, but was withdrawn after it was not correctly placed on the ballot.

Oxford voters may cast their ballots from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 8 at the Oxford Public Safety Building on Route 26.
