GORHAM — William Bernard Carver, 67, of Line Road, Gorham, passed away June 2 at his home after a lengthy illness with chronic lung disease.

He was born in Portland, the son of Perley Sr. and Mildred Hopkins Carver. He was raised in Westbrook and attended schools there.

He was employed by S.D. Warren Paper Co. for 35 years. He had a long-standing position of president of the UPIU 1069 at SD Warren. He was an executive board member of the Maine AFL-CIO, active member of the AFL-CIO Central Labor Council, and a graduate of the George Meany Center for Labor Studies. He served 14 years as an international representative of various unions including United Papermakers and Paperworkers, United Paperworkers International Union, and retired from United Steelworkers International Union.

He was a family-oriented man. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and enjoyed his dogs, horses, and his cat, Josie.

He is survived by his wife, Meredith Campbell Carver, of Gorham; four sons, Greg and his wife, Lori, of Gray, Michael of Limerick, Randy of Lagrange and Jeff of Buxton; four sisters, Gertrude Pooler and her husband, Frank, of Scarborough, Shirley Rouse and her husband, James, of Westbrook, Marilyn O’Brien of Baldwin and Cheryl Fuller and her husband, Kenneth, of Saco; a sister-in-law, Laura Carver of Gorham; and five grandchildren.

He was predeceased by an infant son, Scott Carver; a brother, Perley Jr.; and a sister, Ruth Hanson.
