PORTLAND — David “Coach” Wing, 65, of New Gloucester, peacefully ended his battle against heart failure on Tuesday, June 1, with his wife and children by his side, at Portland’s Maine Medical Center.

Dave, a lifelong resident of New Gloucester, was born to parents Forrest and Margaret Wing on March 27, 1945 at “Bessy Libby’s” home in Gray Center. He attended a technical training school in Cleveland, Ohio in 1973 to study electrical rebuilding of starters, alternators and generators while employed at Sanborn’s Motor Express Trucking. In1986 he opened D & D Starter Company Inc., and was frequently referred to as “the starter and alternator genius.”

He was very active with his community by coaching little league baseball for over ten years and led the funding and construction of Intervale Field in 1980, where he spent countless hours mowing and maintaining the ball field. He loved spending time in the Moosehead Lake region of Maine and was an avid hunter, fisherman and explorer of the Golden Road area. He enjoyed weekends with his family, taking the grandchildren sledding in the winter, camping and fishing in the summer and sitting in his chair, watching NASCAR.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of ten years, Marilyn R. Wing; brothers, Harry, Dan, Roger and Tim; sons, David, Tony, Rob and Todd; and daughters, Christy, Heather, Marcy, Tracey and Kelly. He was also blessed with 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

To our “extended family” at MMC, we would like to give special thanks for the above-and-beyond care and support through this difficult journey. No words can express our gratitude and love for you all.
